JLICA contributes to meeting of Inter-Agency Task team on Children and HIV and AIDS (IATT), April 23-25 2007.
Madhu Deshmukh, Co-Chair of Learning Group 2 on community action, and Angela Wakhweya and Linda Richter, Co-Chairs of Learning Group 1 on strengthening families, participated in the meeting of the Inter-Agency Task team on Children and HIV and AIDS (IATT) on April 23-25, 2007. Wakhweya presented JLICA’s goals, structure and methods, while Richter briefed the IATT Steering Committee on the JLICA’s research agenda and facilitated the IATT closing session. A key theme running through the meeting’s first two days was a family-centered approach to reach and serve vulnerable children. Interest in the JLICA among both the Community and Social Protection Working Groups was strong. US Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul opened the meeting and emphasized the need to strike a balance between prevention and services. Peter McDermott, Chief of HIV/AIDS at UNICEF, warned against ideologically driven agendas from London and Washington. The IATT consists of representatives from UNAIDS co-sponsors, donors, NGOs, and other organizations that figure prominently in the international response to the needs and rights of children affected by HIV/AIDS. UNICEF acts as the IATT secretariat. JLICA will continue to collaborate closely with IATT in several research areas.
