- Enhanced Protection for Children Affected by AIDS: A companion paper to The Framework for the Protection, Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children Living in a World with HIV and AIDS: UNICEF prepared this paper to provide additional information and “outlines recommended actions for protecting affected children from increased vulnerability, and for reducing their increased risk of abuse, exploitation and neglect.”.
- Family and Community Interventions for Children Affected by AIDS: Linda Richter, Julie Manegold and Riashnee Pather authored this literature review of more than 400 documents on “interventions directed at supporting families and households, and on building the capacities of communities”.
- The National Household HIV Prevalence and Risk Survey of South African Children: Authored by Heather Brooks, Olive Shisana and Linda Richter, this survey determines “HIV prevalence amongst South African children from 2 to 14 years of age.”
- Bottlenecks and Drip-feeds: Channelling Resources to Communities Responding to Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Southern Africa: Authored by Geoff Foster, this report “identifies a number of ‘bottlenecks’ that are stopping the smooth flow of funds to support community initiatives” responding to orphans and vulnerable children in southern Africa.
- Where the Heart Is: Meeting the Psychosocial Needs of Young Children in the Context of HIV/AIDS: Authored by Linda Richter, Geoff Foster and Lorraine Sherr, this opinion piece was developed through stakeholder workshops on the psychosocial needs of children affected by HIV/AIDS.

- The Impact of HIV/AIDS on the Development of Children: Authored by Linda Richter, this paper “considers the psychosocial impact of HIV/AIDS—particularly the loss of caregiver support and the resultant stress on caregiving systems—on children’s development and adjustment.”
- Understanding the Needs of Orphans and Other Children Affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa: The State of the Science: Authored by USAID, this literature review “was undertaken to summarize the findings that represent the most current understanding (i.e., the state-of-the-art) of children’s vulnerability due to AIDS.”
- Study of the Response by Faith–Based Organizations to Orphans and Vulnerable Children: Authored by UNICEF, this study surveyed “what religious groups are doing to meet the needs of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and to develop an improved and detailed understanding of the responses of religious organizations in east and southern Africa in caring for children affected by AIDS.”
- HIV and AIDS. Ensuring Education Access for Orphans and Vulnerable Children: A Training Module: Prepared by the World Bank and UNICEF, this module “has been developed for the training of key stakeholders within the education sectors of World Bank client countries, nongovernmental organizations, and church-based groups involved with interventions to benefit AIDS orphans and vulnerable children.”
- Operational Guidelines for Supporting Early Child Development (ECD) in Multi-Sectoral HIV/AIDS Programs in Africa: Created by the World Bank, this document “explains why services that address young children’s needs are essential and how they may be fully integrated within the framework of a national, multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS program.”
- Sub-National Distribution and Situation of Orphans: An Analysis of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Focus Countries: Authored by USAID, this study analyzed the “sub-national geographical distribution and living situations of orphans in the African and Caribbean countries identified for special assistance by President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.”
- The Framework for the Protection, Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children Living in a World with HIV and AIDS: Authored by UNAIDS, this framework is “targeted to senior leaders and decision makers around the world who can influence policies, programmes and resources directed to orphans and vulnerable children.
